Goat Island is a beautiful deep-saltwater island in the Stono River in Charleston, South Carolina between James Island, Johns Island, Folly Beach and Kiawah Island. There are two Goat Islands in the Charleston area. This one is not to be confused with the inhabited Goat Island near the Isle of Palms. This island, in the Stono River near Folly Beach, is uninhabited but has a 226' dock with 14' x 20' pierhead, and 10' x 30' floater. The pilings are in place for a second floater, but a new permit from DHEC's OCRM must be acquired to construct it. There is approximately six feet of water at LOW tide off the floater, and nine feet off the pierhead. Go out 10 feet from the pierhead and it deepens to approximately 20 feet. These depths should be able to accommodate a 35' to 40' boat with no problem. Goat Island in the Stono is a FABULOUS place to fish, crab and shrimp, or just camp. The tax records show there are 1.39 high acres but this island has approximately six usable acres surrounded by 17.22 acres of marsh and creeks, and beyond that, hundreds of acres of marsh and river. There are at least five places on the island where individuals can camp and not be seen from any of the other campsites. Another OUTSTANDING benefit is quiet. The Stono River has a lot less boat traffic than the ICW. Goat Island in the Stono is peaceful, and there is HISTORY. During the Siege of Charleston in the War Between the States, the island was occupied by Union troops and connected to Horse Island and other nearby islands by footbridges "designed to protect this route from Confederate attack via Sol Legare Island," according to an official Civil War GPS Survey. The property is in Charleston County and zoned NRM, Natural Resource Management.
