Loggerhead Turtle Nesting on Kiawah Island, SC

Kiawah Island, SC – It is nesting season for the Loggerhead Turtles from mid-May until early August.  The loggerhead was listed as a threatened species in 1978 under the Endangered Species Act so please do not approach or disturb nesting turtles and abstain from shining lights on them.  They are residents of the open ocean and make their way onto the Kiawah Island beaches during the nighttime hours to dig a nest and lay their eggs.  Nests normally contain between 100 and 150 eggs which will hatch in approximately two months.  The hatchlings will make their way down the beach and into the surf.

Nesting efforts are monitored on our beaches by a group of resident volunteers each year and this program has been in place since 1973.  The Town of Kiawah Island has provided funding and logistical support to the turtle program since 1990.  The volunteers patrol the entire beach during nesting season by truck each morning to locate nests laid the previous night.

Once located, the nest is marked with a numbered post or moved landward is its too low on the beach to protect them from being washed over by high tides.  To personally watch a nest begin to hatch is an experience that will remain with you forever.  Consider a Kiawah Island Vacation Rental with Akers and Ellis Kiawah Island Real Estate featuring villas, condos and estate homes.

Kiawah Island – Bohicket Marina Billfish Tournament

Saturday was the final day of fishing in the Kiawah Island Bohicket Marina Invitational Billfish Tournament.

Blue Sky out of Georgetown, owned by Greg Smith of Pawleys Island, brought in a 515-pound blue marlin which created quite the buzz since a blue marlin had not been brought to the dock in a Governor’s Cup event since 2007. The fish was worth $26,125 from the optional tournament within a tournament.

Game On, owned by Sea Hunt Boats of Lexington, took first place in the tournament with 800 points for releasing a blue marlin (600 points) and a sailfish (200 points) Thursday. Game On earned $8,000 plus $15,390 from the tournament within a tournament.

My Time Out and Rascal took second and third, respectively, with 600 points each for releasing blue marlin on Thursday. My Time Out earned $5,000 while Rascal won $3,000.

Three billfish were released Saturday — a blue marlin by the Mary Agnes, a white marlin by Five O’Clock Somewhere and a sailfish by Reel Passion. The non-billfish winners, worth $1,500 each, were: dolphin, Trust Me, 44.8; wahoo, Miss Magnolia, 35.0; and tuna, Small Change, 21.0. Heather Fanucchi, aboard Five O’Clock Somewhere, was the top female angler with a white marlin release. Caleb Teske, aboard the Middleton 58, was the top youth angler with a 36.2-pound dolphin.

Akers and Ellis Kiawah Island Real Estate offers homes for sales on both Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island as well as vacation and long term rental properties.  Bohicket Marina is located between Kiawah and Seabrook Islands and offers shopping and dining options as well as various fishing tournaments for all ages.

Kiawah Island Real Estate – Easier to Travel

Cheaper flights to get to Charleston means easier access to Kiawah Island, SC.  Southwest Airlines announced Tuesday May 11th that it would begin service to Charleston within a year.  In addition to inexpensive fares, Southwest is noted for its excellent customer service and for not charging passengers for up to two pieces of luggage.

Last Friday, May 7th at approximately 1:30PM, the BB&T bank branch on Seabrook was robbed again.  It was presumed that the pair that robbed it about a month ago was responsible.  Yesterday Charleston County Deputies arrested one suspect and are looking for the second.

Bohicket Marina is again hosting the Governor’s Cup Billfishing Tournament.  Beginning today and through this Saturday more than twenty-six boats will compete to see who catches the largest billfish.  Participating boats can fish two out of the three days.  First place will pay $8,000, second $5,000 and third $3,000.

The past few days the weather on Seabrook has been absolutely wonderful—cooler mornings and evenings with pleasant temperatures during the day and no humidity.  Visit AET for Kiawah Island Real Estate listings for Kiawah Island, Seabrook Island, Charleston and Mt. Pleasant.

Kiawah Island Golf – The Ocean Course

There are golf courses, and then there are great golf courses, the outsized affairs that provoke our awe.  The Ocean Course is like that: unendingly beautiful to look at, impeccably handled in design and execution, and impossible to play.  Feel the love?  Nope.

That’s Pete Dye when it comes to designing golf courses.  He’s a giant.  But no love.  Dye himself hides a bit behind a gruff exterior, but you won’t come across a nicer man, a more provocative golf mind, or an architect who believes more vehemently that designing golf courses is a good deal more simple than it’s made out to be.  Some of the most notable minimalists around these days — Tom Doak to name one — started their careers with Pete Dye.

The Ocean layout is no secret: best-known as the site of the 1991 Ryder Cup matches, it will host the PGA Championship in 2012, and for what it’s worth, you’ll find it on most every list of the best 100 golf courses in the world.  Running tight to a brilliantly white strand of South Carolina’s Atlantic beachfront and rolling dunes for much of its route, The Ocean Course is minimally manicured, loaded with hazards, and almost invariably windy.  Its somewhat links-like routing (it doubles up on conventional links structure by going out and back to the clubhouse on both nines) assures that the golfer will contend with those winds, which commonly blow at anywhere from 10 to 40 MPH, from a variety of angles.  Kiawah Island Real Estate offers many options to be close to the course or on the course itself including rentals and Kiawah Island Real Estate Sales.  One way to sum up the character of the course is to say that from the many tee shots requiring forced carries, to the shortest of oh-so-fast putts, the Ocean Course is ready to pounce

Johns Island SC Shopping

John’s Island Shopping

Freshfields is a compact, walkable commercial center that currently serves as Kiawah/Seabrook/southern John’s Island’s more aesthetically gifted and more environmentally friendly version of your typical island getaway one-stop-shop.  You travel down that long stretch of Bohicket Road under a breathtaking canopy of live oaks, surrounded by the hallmarks of backroads South Carolina, and emerging at the roundabout between Kiawah and Seabrook Islands.  It boasts a variety staples for village centers that, when combined, work quite well in developing a sense of place, including artisan shops, small boutique shops, mom-and-pop restaurants, professional offices, an ice cream shop, and a sporting goods store, among others.  We were thrilled to take in the old-fashioned soda bar in the quaint Vincent’s Pharmacy as well as the neighborhood-scale Newton Farms grocery store, complete with its own large gardening section and specialty brands of just about any type of product you could ever want.  Let Johns Island SC Real Estate work with you on your real estate needs.  But the best part of Freshfields, is the diverse collection of structures, born out of unique perspectives on old village themes of the past and constructed with familiar Carolina Lowcountry materials.
