The 15th hole on Seabrook Island’s Ocean Winds course is selected for “The Dream 18 of South Carolina”. According to Brian Thelan, PGA Head Professional, “.. with two outstanding 18 hole courses designed by two of the world’s most renowned course architects, Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and Willard Byrd, selecting one signature hole is almost not fair.”
The par 3 15th hole on Oceans Winds course captures the beauty and feel of Seabrook Island and the Lowcountry in general. As players arrive at the tee, they are greeted by calming marsh views both right and left with a winding tidal creek crossing their view to the green.
A large Live Oak tree draped in Spanish moss protects the right front of the green and bunkers can be found front center, back right and left. The hole plays anywhere from 180 yards from the tips to 75 yards from the front of a tee box which follows the natural contours of the creek. Soft swirling sea breezes coming from the Atlantic a few hundred yards away add to the challenge of selecting the appropriate club.
Players must choose enough club to carry the marsh but not too much or they’ll find the brackish water hazard just over the back side of the green. Once on the putting surface, the green sloping back to front and right to left adds to the excitement and challenge of making a good score on the hole. Certain pin locations can add a stroke to the level of difficulty of this scenic par 3.
