Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission has created a trail run and will be held at Mullet Hall on Johns Island which is dubbed the Mullet Haul.  Mullet Hall is an equestrian center that boasts several events each year, however this is a new event to the Center.  There will be two races, a 5 and 10 mile run, which both start at 10:00am on March 5th and take you through the scenic equestrian trails.  There will be a post-race party that all runners are invited to attend and will feature beverages and live music by Uncle Funkle.  You can call (843) 795-4386 to register and online registration is open through March 4th. Fees are $35 for the 5 mile run and $45 for the 10 mile run.  Kiawah River Estates is a planned community located on Johns Island and Akers and Ellis is pleased to offer several homes and vacant lots for sale in this community.

To add to fun, the race participants are encouraged to boast their own Mullet hairstyle (whether real or just for the day)!  This is certain to become an annual event at Mullet Hall.

Rosebank Farms May be Leaving Johns Island SC

Johns Island, SC - A sad day may be in the near future for many residents of Johns Island, Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island.  The stand for Rosebank Farms may soon have to end its retail side of the business.  The lease for the roadside stand on Betsy Kerrison Parkway expires at the end of January and property owner doesn’t want to renew it due to personal reasons.  The stand provides fresh produce for not only nearby restaurants on Kiawah Island but also downtown Charleston restaurants touting local products.  The farm stand of flowers, fruits and vegetables, local seafood, and fresh pies and other pastries and its popular petting zoo of sorts at the doorstep of Kiawah and Seabrook Islands is a favorite among the locals and the visitors.  Additionally, the stand offers Lowcountry jams, jellies, grits, seasonings and local artwork.  Many are hopeful a solution is found to keep Rosebank Farms’ Stand open for many more years to come in this location.

Johns Island, SC I526 Update

Johns Island, SC - After five public hearings, the I-526 expansion project has been put on hold. It was a unanimous decision to alter the potential plan and remove the section that would connect James Island.   By altering the plan in efforts to stay under budget, Charleston County would have to reapply for funding from the state.   Additionally, a new plan most likely will take between 12 and 18 months to be created. Statements made by the Charleston Council are positive in regards to an expansion eventually being a reality, however the main concerns are staying within budget and developing what the people of Johns Island and the Charleston area what they want and what they need.   An expansion project has been under consideration since the 1970’s and has been a great debate.

Johns Island and Kiawah Island I-526 Extension

South Carolina Department of Transportation unveiled their plan last month on the proposed Interstate 526 expansion.  And adding to this already heated debate, the meetings regarding the plan were held downtown and those most affected live in more rural areas.  The plan is to connect West Ashley, James Island and Johns Island with an eight mile parkway that begins where I-526 ends at Highway 17 in West Ashley and ends at the James Island Connector.

In-between these two locations, a pair of bridges will cross the Stono River and access roads will link to both James and Johns Islands.  The plan for the expansion is to be more boulevard-like with lower speed limits (35-45 MPH) and a bike/pedestrian lanes.  If the plan is approved, the budget is $69 million and will displace four businesses and 22 residences.  Whether you are for or against the expansion. the opinions are quite strong on both sides.  Akers and Ellis provides homes for sale on Kiawah Island and vacation rentals on Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island and has many Johns Island Real Estate listings on Johns Island.

Johns Island SC Shopping

John’s Island Shopping

Freshfields is a compact, walkable commercial center that currently serves as Kiawah/Seabrook/southern John’s Island’s more aesthetically gifted and more environmentally friendly version of your typical island getaway one-stop-shop.  You travel down that long stretch of Bohicket Road under a breathtaking canopy of live oaks, surrounded by the hallmarks of backroads South Carolina, and emerging at the roundabout between Kiawah and Seabrook Islands.  It boasts a variety staples for village centers that, when combined, work quite well in developing a sense of place, including artisan shops, small boutique shops, mom-and-pop restaurants, professional offices, an ice cream shop, and a sporting goods store, among others.  We were thrilled to take in the old-fashioned soda bar in the quaint Vincent’s Pharmacy as well as the neighborhood-scale Newton Farms grocery store, complete with its own large gardening section and specialty brands of just about any type of product you could ever want.  Let Johns Island SC Real Estate work with you on your real estate needs.  But the best part of Freshfields, is the diverse collection of structures, born out of unique perspectives on old village themes of the past and constructed with familiar Carolina Lowcountry materials.

Johns Island Chefs Welcome Kids to Their Restaurants

One of the best things about writing a book on a topic that concerns many people is having an opportunity to meet those people, and passionately discuss the issue. Since publishing “My Two-Year-Old Eats Octopus: Raising Children Who Love to Eat Everything” last November, I have traveled to many cities around the country , talking to parents, grandparents, teachers and caregivers about the kids in their lives, and what those kids are eating.  I attended a chef lunch back in January at Fat Hen restaurant on John’s Island, South Carolina, hosted by another dad chef, Fred Neuville. His five children, all adopted from foster care about nine years ago, came to him not knowing that fresh vegetables even existed. “And now they are all involved in the restaurant and in gardening,” Neuville told me. The fabulous spread at Fat Hen included Hoppin’ John, grilled octopus, corn chowder and garlic spinach. And yes, the kids loved it!

Angel Oak Park on Johns Island South Carolina

Johns Island SC, towering over 65 feet high, the Angel Oak has shaded John’s Island, South Carolina, for over 1400 years, and would have sprouted 1000 years before Columbus’ arrival in the New World. Recorded history traces the ownership of the live oak and surrounding land, back to the year 1717 when Abraham Waight received it as part of a small land grant. The tree stayed in the Waight family for four generations, and was part of a Marriage Settlement to Justus Angel and Martha Waight Tucker Angel.

The Angel Oak is thought to be one of the oldest living things east of the Mississippi River. Live oaks generally grow out and not up, but the Angel Oak has had plenty of time to do both, standing 65 ft high, has a diameter of spread reaching 160 feet, a circumference of nearly 25 feet and with a canopy providing 17,000 square feet of shade. Its limbs, the size of tree trunks themselves, are so large and heavy that some of them rest on the ground (some even drop underground for a few feet and then come back up), a feature common to only the very oldest live oaks. The City of Charleston now owns Angel Oak. There is no charge to view the tree and is a must see when visiting Charleston, South Carolina. Angel Oak Park is open 9-5 daily.

Johns Island SC Small Plane Crash

JOHNS ISLAND, SC  - A Johns Island man died in a plane crash Thursday morning. Ratcliffe was in a fixed wing single-engine Kolb Mark III Xtra, an amateur-built plane. The crash happened at around 11 a.m. not far from the Johns Island Executive Airport runway. “It was an airplane basically just practicing, circling the airport and he went out of sight and airport personnel called 911,” said Robert Giguere, a Federal Aviation Administration official.  The National Transportation Safety Board is making arrangements to remove the wreckage and bring all the pieces to one place.  Investigators will then inspect it and try and figure out what went wrong.
