When the 2012 PGA Championship arrives at Kiawah Island Resort memories of the 1991 Ryder Cub will certainly remain. The infamous Battle by Sea put Kiawah Island and Pete Dye’s designed Ocean Course on the map. In addition to the Ryder Cup, the Ocean Course and Kiawah also played host to the Senior PGA Championship in 2007.
While the PGA Championship, US Open and Masters often compete for the informal title of America’s Super Bowl of golf, the PGA is revered among those who have dedicated their lives to the sport of golf. The vast majority of the 20,000 members can only dream of playing in front of the television cameras on a Sunday afternoon but have influenced the game of golf collectively in a way greater than many victories on those glorious final days. And what may come as a surprise to those not very familiar with the game of golf is that the PGA Championship is considered by those who play it to be more difficult simply because the field of players is tougher. Unlike the Masters and the US Open, there are no free passes for past winners, runner-ups and no invitations to play.
The PGA Championship allows the underdog to compete with the champion. The unknown to battle the multi-millionaire. While previous winners have included Tiger Woods ,Phil MIckelson, Davis Love III, Vijay Singh, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead and Lee Trevino, who can forget the surprising John Daley Championship in 1991, a teaching pro from Crooked Stick in Carmel, Indiana.
Or about the fact that out of the past 4 years the PGA championship has been won by a German, South Korean and Irishman. (put there names in here) This in the aftermath of 4 years of Woods, Michelson and Singh. Who will win this year on Kiawah Island? Tiger or Phil? An an unknown American or international player that captures our hearts this August.

Kiawah History
The land mass known as Kiawah Island was purchased from Native Americans in 1675 by the English government. For the cost of hatchets, cloth, beads and other products manufactured in England, the sale was completed. It encompassed 2700 acres that were taken over as a plantation by Captain George Raynor in 1699. Although there were rumors that Raynor was a reformed pirate, he was welcomed nonetheless by the people of South Carolina. Shortly after being granted the tract of land by the Lords Proprietors, Raynor divided it into two pieces, selling the second half to Captain William Davis.
Over 100 years later the two pieces of land were united once again by John Stanyarne. Although he did not actually live on Kiawah, but rather on neighboring Johns Island, he used the property for his indigo production and cattle ranching operations. At that time slavery was in full swing and he utiliized dozens of slaves to work the fields. When he passed away, Stanyarne’s estate was valued at $2.5 million. His will requested that the western portion of the island be bestowed upon his granddaughter Mary Gibbes; the eastern section was given to Elizabeth Vanderhorst, his other granddaughter.
The Vanderhorsts lived on the island for many years until their plantation was destroyed by the British army during the American Revolution. However, the family worked hard to restore their plantation to working order and was successful in growing cotton crops for decades. After the Civil War, the Vanderhorst family lost control over their crops and their slaves. The island was eventually abandoned and taken over by black freedmen. One of those former slaves, Quash, became a leader on the island. As one of the few mulatto slaves to ever obtain an education, his family prospered on the island.
It wasn’t until the 20th century that the island started thriving once again. From the mid-nineties onward, the land was sold for private properties and has since become a premiere destination on the east coast. Visitors from around the world make their way to Kiawah Island each year to enjoy the gorgeous weather, unforgettable views of the ocean and relaxed island living.

Don’t worry, however, since the Kiawah Conservancy and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources work together to keep dangerous animals from encroaching on land occupied by humans. Visitors and residents alike always marvel at just how close bottlenose dolphins will swim to shore. No visit to Kiawah is complete without a sighting of these playful creatures jumping through the waves.
