Johns Island, SC - After five public hearings, the I-526 expansion project has been put on hold. It was a unanimous decision to alter the potential plan and remove the section that would connect James Island. By altering the plan in efforts to stay under budget, Charleston County would have to reapply for funding from the state. Additionally, a new plan most likely will take between 12 and 18 months to be created. Statements made by the Charleston Council are positive in regards to an expansion eventually being a reality, however the main concerns are staying within budget and developing what the people of Johns Island and the Charleston area what they want and what they need. An expansion project has been under consideration since the 1970’s and has been a great debate.
