Kiawah Island Beaches
Kiawah Island, SC >> Kiawah Island Beaches
Visit the beaches of the northeast and you will find rocky shores and murky waters; their counterparts on the west coast are characterized by strong currents and cold waters. When you come to the beaches of South Carolina you will find smooth sand and gentle waters that are warm and inviting and, depending on the destination, are undisturbed for mile after mile. This is why people love to live and play on Kiawah Island where ten miles of beach await to explore, swim in the ocean and make sand castles along the water’s edge.
Kiawah Island Beachwalker County Park
During the summer the park offers everything that beachgoers will need: showers, changing rooms, bathrooms, picnic areas, a seasonal snack bar and even chair and umbrella rentals. Swim at your own risk as lifeguards are only occasionally on duty, children should always be accompanied by an adult or other responsible party. There are a few rules to keep in mind when visiting the County Park. Dogs must always be kept on a leash unless in a designated “dog use area, ” cleaning up after your pets is required so purchase a Mutt-Mitt at the concession area if you do not already have a bag available. No public nudity, overnight stays on the beach, fires and fireworks, and of course, no littering. There are plenty of signs posted to remind beachgoers of these rules so please be sure to follow them as there is an active beach patrol that regularly travels the area.
Due to their fragile nature the dunes and wildlife of Kiawah Island are carefully protected by local authorities. Be aware of signs that ask beach walkers to avoid certain dunes or areas that cannot be tread upon. One such area is where sea turtles nest each year, a beautiful natural event that is celebrated by the island’s habitats as well as fiercely protected by them. Each May female loggerheads approach the beach at night, quickly build a nest and deposit on average 120 eggs; the end of the summer heralds the birth of hundreds of baby turtles that will crawl their way to the shore. Join the locals as they watch and photograph this journey each year.
Access to the rest of the island is limited to hotel guests and property owners so be cautioned if you decide to explore some areas outside of the County Park. But people on the island are friendly and exhibit the southern hospitality that is common to the area so don’t be surprised if friends that you make at the County Park invite you over for a party on their sliver of Kiawah Island!
