James Island: A desirable place to live...
James Island – with its centuries-old oak trees, pristine salt marshes, panoramic views of the Charleston harbor, and ideal proximity to both downtown Charleston and Folly Beach – has emerged as one of the Lowcountry’s most desirable places to live
James Island is a thriving community located just west of the Charleston peninsula and minutes from Folly Beach. Until the 1960s, James Island remained predominantly rural and traveling over the bridge to the area was affectionately considered a trip “out to the country”. In fact, the Country Club of Charleston, located on James Island, was originally founded in 1786 and has been listed by the USGA as being the oldest golf club in the United States. The club plays host to the prestigious Azalea golf tournament each year. During the 19th century, plantations were built on James Island, along with the village of Secessionville, a summer retreat for plantation owners.
America’s rich history is deeply rooted in Charleston and on the triangular-shaped island called James Island. In fact it was on James Island the morning of April 12, 1861 that The Civil War began, when Confederate troops at Fort Johnson fired on Union-occupied Fort Sumter. Both forts were located on the island's northern shore. Most of the fighting in the Charleston area during the rest of the Civil War occurred on James Island and Morris Island, as Union troops tried to invade Charleston from the south, from their base on Folly Beach. All of these efforts, including notable assaults on historic Fort Lamar and Battery Wagner, were defeated.
Today, all of the conveniences and most of the pleasures of a larger city can be found on James Island including some of Charleston’s most celebrated and eclectic dining venues. Various businesses and residential areas cover James Island. The island’s wide variety of housing from luxurious high-end waterfront property along the harbor, creeks, rivers, and marshes to small bungalows with all the charm of yesterday can be found on the island. Exclusive real estate opportunities offer magnificent views of historic Fort Sumter, Charleston harbor, Folly Beach, Sullivan’s Island and the Morris Island Lighthouse.
The island offers plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities. Nature provides bountiful creeks, marshes, rivers, and sounds which are ideal for boating, crabbing, shrimping, fishing, canoeing, kayaking and hiking. The James Island County Park is a tremendous 643 acre park with bike trails, nature trails, a climbing wall, playground, pedal boats, open fields, a dog park and picnic areas. In the summer, visit Splash Zone located inside the park. During the winter holidays the park lights up for the annual Holiday Festival of Lights which has become a right of passage for the holiday season.
