Although the island is intensely rural with hundreds of acres of protected woods and wetlands, many upscale homes on estate-sized lots are now featured along Wadmalaw Island’s waterfront areas. The traditional occupation of many locals on Wadmalaw Island is farming. Extracting the ocean’s resources through fishing, crabbing, and shrimping also serves as occupations and pleasurable pastimes for many. Each year a celebration of the traditional arts and crafts of the African American culture, known as the Gullah Festival, is hosted on Wadmalaw Island. Many enjoy the encompassing exhibits and crafts such as basket weaving during the festival. Wadmalaw Island is home for the only tea plantation in America, the Charleston Tea Plantation, which began in 1799 when the first tea plants were brought to Charleston. The hot humid summers and sandy soils on Wadmalaw Island provide ideal conditions for growing tea. The public may also tour Wadmalaw’s local vineyard which hosts special events throughout the year.
